The Notre Dame Irish won last Saturday’s game on a score of 41-17 and Penn State left Notre Dame Stadium with wounded pride and a battered national standing.
Notre Dame Quarter back Brady Quinn threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns last Saturday. He returned to the high-flying standard Notre Dame set a year ago.
"It was one of those games where you looked at the scoreboard and you couldn't believe it was the score," Nittany Lions running back Tony Hunt said.
According to Weis, the time management made by Brady and the offense was excellent in that drive.
It started with the first touchdown pass – a 7 yard toss to
Jeff Samardzija placed the fourth-ranked Irish up 13-0 late in the second quarter.
And followed up by a 9-yard pass to Rhema McKnight with seven seconds remaining in the first half, gave the Irish a 20-0 lead. And the third, a 15-yard toss to Darius Walker early in the fourth quarter, was icing on the cake for a 41-3 lead.
Brady Quinn was involved in every play on the drive, 5-of-5 passing for 58 yards on the 69-yard drive. He hit three different targets – McKnight, junior running back Darius Walker and senior tight end John Carlson – on the drive.
Notre Dame ran a fake punt on a fourth-and-3 midway through the third quarter, a 43-yard gain for senior linebacker/running back Travis Thomas. It was the longest run of his career and eventually set up his 1-yard touchdown run in which he ripped off the helmet of Penn State cornerback Justin King.
This game served as confirmation that the defense's lock-down performance against Georgia Tech had been no fluke. While it gave up its share of yards, the defense was far stingier when it came to ceding points.
After an up-and-down season a year ago that saw the unit hold Michigan to just 10 points, but give up a season-high 44 a week later to Michigan State this defense seems much steadier.
Last Saturday’s victory made Notre Dame moved to No. 2 in the Associated Press poll, up from a tie for fourth with Auburn, and moved to No. 3 in the USA Today coaches’ poll, up from fifth. Michigan Wolverines moved down to No. 11 in the AP poll. Among other Notre Dame opponents, USC trojans are ranked fourth. Penn State dropped to 25th, and Georgia Tech,
UCLA Bruins and Purdue received votes.
